Netflix shows to give you the giggles and get your mind off Coronavirus

With the numbers of people affected by the Coronavirus rising as we speak, it’s no surprise that most of us are socially distancing and self-isolating. With lots of time on our hands to overthink and worry, it’s easy to get sucked into the doom and gloom of it all, so we thought we’d compile a list of Netflix shows that are guaranteed to get the laughs in.

Grace & FrankieGrace and Frankie

If you’ve not heard of Grace and Frankie before (have you been living in a pineapple under the sea?) you’re missing out. A former hippie who burns sage and smokes marijuana (Frankie) and a snooty Grace (Jane Fonda) are forced to cohabit after learning that their husbands have been having an affair with each other for the past 20 years! As much as they hated each other to start with, the two ex-wives bond over taking muscle relaxants, drinking on the beach and their mutual sadness. The chemistry between real-life friends Fonda and Tomlin is side-splittingly funny.

It’s Always Sunny in PhiladelphiaIt's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

The Guardian referred to this show as a pop-culture giant and I couldn’t agree more.  Set in an Irish dive bar, this series follows a group of borderline alcoholics who would be hated if they weren’t so hilarious. The gang get themselves involved in numerous controversies, each one as ridiculous as the next and although they are all in the same boat, they are constantly plotting against each other. Ripping apart social norms, its corrosive worldview is probably consistent and in tune with the current times. This is one of those series where you really get to know the characters and they become even funnier the longer you know them.

Bojack HorsemanBojack Horseman

A cartoon series? Really? YES REALLY! This was the first animated series on Netflix and this dark comedy stars a humanoid horse, Bojack Horseman who was once the star of a 90’s sitcom which was cancelled unexpectedly. Once you get over the fact that every character is a different animal you can really get immersed in the story and character development. The show is set 18years later when Bojack decides that it is time for his big comeback but Hollywood is very different from the days when he tasted success. Don’t be fooled by the child-like animation of the series, it is definitely not for the little ones as the sex, drugs and alcohol references are plenty!

Arrested development

Arrested Development

Probably one of the most bizarre of tv series, this critically acclaimed show makes you cry with laughter from how strange, inappropriate and uncomfortable it is. It is based on the Bluth family, which was once a prominent name in business, and loses everything after the head of the family is convicted for fraud. It is up to the owner’s son, Micheal, to maintain the order at home. Although the show follows a dysfunctional family there is always someone in the family that you can relate to. It is complex, fast-paced and brilliantly funny. The show aired on Fox but the fifth season was commissioned by Netflix, making it a Netflix Original series.

The Good PlaceThe Good Place

This forking good Netflix series isn’t even set in our world and provides the escapism we need during a world crisis like this. Remember me as you disappear into the binge-watchers abyss and be prepared to see the Are you still watching? Message pop onto your screen in no time because this show is addictive to say the least. The vibrant colours and glossy scenes are enough to uplift anyone. One of the funniest feats of the show is that the characters are physically unable to swear and everything turns into “fork this” or “this is shirt”. The opening scene shows Eleanor, a deceased saleswoman who lived a morally corrupt life, in the afterlife finding herself in “heaven” and deciding that she couldn’t have made it there and that she was sent there in error. We follow her journey in trying to hide her past in order to stay under the radar and in heaven.

Derry GirlsDerry Girls

Set in Northern Ireland Derry Girls is a heartwarming show about an Irish family set against the backdrop of The Troubles. We follow the lives of a group of friends who all attend a Catholic girls secondary school. In the opening scene, we are met with the characters complaining about how much of an inconvenience a bomb scare on the bridge is because their school bus will have to go the long way round to school. The beauty of the show lies in the fact that it allows teenagers to experience really what growing up means in all its awkwardness through extraordinary times and not letting this negate their rights to live hilariously ordinary lives.
